What IS Grow Your Own Work?

Everyone has a story to tell, and GYOW is an inclusive workshop to inspire you how to tell yours.

As an Actor, Writer, Visual Artist, and creator of Theatre and Film, with 30 years experience, I am SO excited to share with you what I wish I’d known many years ago.

It's a day of playful discovery…so much to do, so little time! There’s nothing else out there quite like this.

Need a massive SHIFT? Grab your dreams, your blocks and your seatbelts, because it’s time to fly!

Grow Your Own Work Full Day Workshop - For Adults

In trying to earn a living from our art, we often lose our WHY and our JOY along the way.

In this workshop, I will be sharing tools and inspired creative methods I have learnt in 30 years of creating work. Arrive with a seed and leave with the inspiration, motivation, and a roadmap to tell your stories.

Feel excited about creating again!

Perhaps you are an actor who craves playing a certain role? A novelist who doesn't know where to start? A filmmaker who needs a story? A sculptor? A visual artist who is lost for ideas? A musician? A creative mind who doesn’t know WHAT their genre OR medium is?

Stop waiting for permission! Everyone has a unique story to tell, and past participants found they leave with a deeper understanding of their own voice, and a toolkit to guide their authentic storytelling/artists journey.

Grow Your Own Work in 90 Minutes For Students

Designed for students to discover their own voice as storytellers, I take them into a playful 90 minute workshop.

We explore what seed they already have, be it a character, a theme, a genre etc.

Then they explore who they are as ‘artists’, what drives their need to create, who their influences may be, and what their chosen genre/style may be.

Then, we begin to build the world of their story, its inhabitants, the look, feel etc.

They will emerge with a strong flavour of who they are, and what they want to say.

A perfect focus session to inspire them into a more individual and cohesive understanding of what makes them so beautifully unique and valid as creators. Which, naturally inspires motivation and the best outcome for themselves.

This is a wonderful boost to the curriculum for 16+ year olds at school or further education colleges studying Media Studies, Performing Arts, Writing, Directing, Fine Arts and all arts based subjects.

Commonly asked questions…

Que: Do I need to have made anything before?

Ans: No, this is for anyone. It can be your first tentative step into becoming the artist you’ve dreamed of, or you could be a prolific artist, with a huge body of work. Everyone is welcome and in this space, there is no hierarchy or expectation.

Que: I don’t see myself as a storyteller, is it still relevant?

Ans: All artforms are a form of storytelling, a painting, a photograph, an album, anything…whether the artist knows the story, or if it’s a story imagined by the receiver. This workshop is designed for artists of any discipline. But reach out to me and we’ll discuss further.

Que: How many people are in the workshop?

Ans: The numbers are capped at 15, but the class would work just as effectively with one. I keep the groups small so I can work with each of you individually.

Que: What if I need guidance after the workshop? Can I get in touch?

Ans: In the future there will be optional monthly zoom check-ins with a topic for discussion in them each time. This is an opportunity to build your community, and share your journey and/or questions. I am also available for support with emails. It’s important to me that you get the support you need to help you keep going.

Que: Will I have to speak and interact?

Ans: This workshop is for you, so you can make it whatever you need it to be for yourself. Past participants have sometimes been very nervous and uncomfortable speaking with strangers, but found the space to be incredibly safe, and surprised themselves at the level of vulnerability everyone showed. This in turn, gave them the confidence to sink in too. However, saying this, I’m very experienced in working with people who have extreme social anxiety, and there would be zero pressure to feel discomfort. There are opportunities to share, but not everyone will do so.

Que: What is your cancellation policy?

Ans: I understand sometimes life doesn’t go as planned. So if at the last minute you need to change your booking, I will honour a ‘rain check’ up to 24hrs prior to the event, which will be held as a voucher for a future workshop when you are able to come.

Que: Can I use my concession card?

Ans: Yes, if you hold a Student Card, Seniors or Healthcare Card, a concession rate is offered as an option at checkout. Cardholders are required to present a hard copy of their card on the day of the workshop.

Que: Will you provide food?

Ans: Tea and coffee is provided. You will need to bring your own snacks and lunch. We will take a 30 minute lunchbreak.
